Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Aster root (from plants of the genus Aster), particularly the species Aster tataricus, has a history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). It is known as "Zi Wan" in TCM and is primarily used as an expectorant to treat coughs and respiratory issues. However, aster root has occasionally been referenced in traditional herbal texts for calming effects and supporting sleep, often as a minor ingredient in complex herbal formulas aimed at soothing the mind or relieving anxiety—a symptom that can accompany insomnia. The use of aster root specifically for insomnia is not widespread nor central within TCM or other herbal traditions; it is typically not a primary sedative herb.

Scientific studies on aster root focus largely on its anti-inflammatory and expectorant properties. There is minimal modern pharmacological research investigating its effects on sleep, sedation, or direct treatment of insomnia. Thus, while there is some traditional precedent for its use as a minor calming agent, there is little scientific validation for its efficacy as a treatment for insomnia. The evidence supporting its use for this purpose is weak, and it is generally rated low (1/5) for insomnia support.
