Lubricants are used in the medical field primarily for joint injuries and degenerative joint conditions, such as osteoarthritis. The most notable example is the intra-articular injection of hyaluronic acid (a natural lubricant found in synovial fluid) into joints. This treatment, sometimes called viscosupplementation, is intended to restore the viscoelasticity of joint fluid, reduce pain, and improve mobility. There is moderate scientific evidence supporting its use, particularly in knee osteoarthritis, where multiple randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses suggest a modest improvement in pain and function compared to placebo. However, the clinical significance of these benefits is debated, and guidelines vary in their recommendations. Outside of intra-articular injections, topical lubricants (such as gels or ointments) are used primarily to reduce friction and prevent further skin damage in minor injuries, but they do not directly treat underlying injuries. In summary, there is scientific evidence for the use of specific lubricants (notably hyaluronic acid) in joint injuries and degenerative joint disease, though the strength and clinical significance of the evidence remain under discussion.
