Hesperitin is a flavonoid metabolite derived from hesperidin, commonly found in citrus fruits. Its use in supporting or treating Inflammatory Bowel Disorders (IBD) such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis is primarily based on preclinical scientific evidence. Animal studies and in vitro experiments have demonstrated that hesperitin possesses anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory properties. Specifically, hesperitin has been shown to reduce levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (such as TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β), inhibit NF-κB pathway activation, and decrease oxidative stress in experimental models of colitis. These effects are believed to help attenuate intestinal inflammation and protect mucosal integrity.
Despite these promising findings, there is a lack of robust clinical trials in humans evaluating hesperitin's efficacy or safety in IBD patients. Most of the available evidence comes from cell culture studies or animal models, and there are currently no major guidelines recommending hesperitin as a treatment for IBD. Thus, while the compound is not used traditionally for this indication, and there is some scientific rationale for its potential benefits, the overall quality and quantity of the evidence are limited. More research, especially well-designed human clinical trials, is needed to establish hesperitin's therapeutic value for IBD.
