Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

The use of Pagoda Tree (Styphnolobium japonicum, also known as Sophora japonica) in the management of hepatitis is primarily rooted in traditional medicine, particularly within Chinese herbal medicine. Historically, the flower buds (known as "Huai Hua Mi") have been used to "cool the blood," stop bleeding, and address conditions related to "heat" in the liver, including symptoms associated with liver disorders. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioners have employed Pagoda Tree extracts for ailments such as hemorrhoidal bleeding and, in some instances, for liver-related conditions due to their perceived anti-inflammatory and hepatoprotective properties.

However, scientific validation specifically supporting its use for hepatitis is limited. A few in vitro and animal studies suggest that compounds found in Pagoda Tree, such as flavonoids (notably rutin and quercetin), possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and may offer some degree of liver protection. Nonetheless, these findings are preliminary and not directly linked to hepatitis virus infection or clinical outcomes in hepatitis patients. There are no robust clinical trials demonstrating efficacy in treating hepatitis (viral or otherwise) in humans. Therefore, while the traditional use exists, the scientific evidence base remains weak, justifying a low evidence rating.
