Evidence supporting the use of: Andrographis
For the health condition: Hepatitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Andrographis paniculata has a longstanding history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), for the treatment of liver disorders including hepatitis. In these systems, Andrographis is often prescribed for its purported "liver-protective" and "detoxifying" effects. The herb is believed to reduce jaundice and support overall liver function, and is sometimes used in multi-herb formulations aimed at treating hepatitis or other hepatic ailments.
Scientific validation for Andrographis in the context of hepatitis is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that compounds in Andrographis, such as andrographolide, may have hepatoprotective and anti-inflammatory properties. These studies have demonstrated effects such as reduced liver enzyme levels and amelioration of liver damage in chemically-induced hepatitis in animal models. However, clinical trials in humans specifically evaluating Andrographis for hepatitis are scarce, poorly controlled, or have methodological limitations. There is insufficient robust clinical evidence to conclusively support its effectiveness in treating viral hepatitis or serious liver disease in humans.
In summary, the use of Andrographis for hepatitis is primarily justified by traditional use, and while there is some preliminary scientific interest, the level of evidence supporting its efficacy for this condition remains low (rated 2 out of 5).
