Scoparia dulcis, commonly known as sweet broomweed or licorice weed, has a longstanding history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Asia, Africa, and South America, for supporting liver (hepatic) health. Traditional healers have used various parts of the plant—primarily the aerial parts and roots—as remedies for jaundice, hepatitis, and other liver-related conditions. The justification for its use comes primarily from ethnobotanical records and anecdotal evidence passed down through generations.

There is a moderate amount of preclinical scientific research exploring the hepatoprotective (liver-protecting) effects of Scoparia dulcis. Some animal studies have reported that extracts of the plant can mitigate chemically induced liver damage, reduce liver enzyme levels, and improve histopathological liver markers. Phytochemical analyses suggest that compounds such as flavonoids, terpenoids, and saponins present in Scoparia dulcis may contribute to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, which could benefit liver health.

However, robust human clinical trials are lacking, and the available scientific data is mostly experimental or in vitro. Thus, while traditional use is well-established and preliminary science is promising, definitive scientific validation in humans is still insufficient. The evidence rating reflects solid traditional use and modest preclinical support, but not strong clinical confirmation.
