Evidence supporting the use of: Picrorhiza kurroa
For the body system: Hepatic System
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Picrorhiza kurroa, commonly known as Kutki, is a herb traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine for liver ailments. Modern scientific research has provided substantial support for its hepatoprotective properties. Several in vitro and in vivo studies have demonstrated that extracts of Picrorhiza kurroa possess significant liver-protective effects against a variety of hepatotoxins, such as carbon tetrachloride and paracetamol. The main active constituents, picroside I, picroside II, and kutkoside, are believed to contribute to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, which are critical in protecting liver cells from damage.
Clinical studies, though limited in number and scale, have also indicated beneficial effects. For example, small-scale trials in patients with viral hepatitis and other liver disorders have shown improvements in biochemical markers of liver function with Picrorhiza kurroa supplementation. The herb is thought to help stimulate bile secretion and improve digestion, thereby supporting overall hepatic function.
While most evidence comes from animal and laboratory studies, the consistency of hepatoprotective effects observed, along with preliminary clinical findings and a long history of traditional use, provide a solid scientific basis for the use of Picrorhiza kurroa in supporting the hepatic system. However, larger, well-designed clinical trials are needed to confirm efficacy and safety in humans.
