Maslinic acid, a natural pentacyclic triterpene primarily found in olive skins and other plant sources, has been investigated for its hepatoprotective (liver-supporting) properties in several scientific studies. Preclinical research, especially in animal models, indicates that maslinic acid may exert beneficial effects on liver health. These effects include reducing liver inflammation, oxidative stress, and fibrosis. Mechanistic studies suggest that maslinic acid's antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions help protect liver cells from damage induced by toxins or metabolic stress. For example, studies in rodents have shown maslinic acid attenuates chemically-induced liver injury and can lower markers of liver enzymes (such as ALT and AST), which are indicative of liver cell damage.
Despite these promising results, most of the evidence is limited to laboratory and animal studies; robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. There is not yet sufficient large-scale human data to fully validate its efficacy or safety for liver support in clinical practice. Nonetheless, the existing research provides a scientific rationale for its use as a supportive agent for the hepatic system, particularly as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compound.
