Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ginsenosides are the primary active compounds found in ginseng (Panax species), which has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine for a variety of health purposes, including supporting liver (hepatic) function. Historically, ginseng has been used as a general tonic, believed to improve vitality, endurance, and organ health. Some traditional texts and practices suggest that ginseng can help protect the liver from toxins, improve energy metabolism, and support recovery from illness.

Modern scientific research on ginsenosides and liver health is limited and mostly preclinical. Some animal and in vitro studies indicate potential hepatoprotective effects, such as reducing liver enzyme levels, protecting against chemically-induced liver injury, and modulating inflammation and oxidative stress. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and the evidence base is not strong enough to conclusively support the use of ginsenosides for hepatic health. Thus, while traditional use is well-established, scientific validation remains limited.
