Evidence supporting the use of: Fungus
For the body system: Hepatic System
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Fungi, particularly medicinal mushrooms such as Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum), Shiitake (Lentinula edodes), and Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor), have been traditionally used in East Asian medicine for liver health. More recently, scientific studies have investigated these mushrooms for their hepatoprotective properties. Preclinical research indicates that various fungal extracts possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory effects, which can contribute to the protection of liver cells from damage caused by toxins, viruses, or metabolic stress. For example, polysaccharides and triterpenoids extracted from Reishi mushroom have demonstrated the ability to reduce liver enzyme levels and inhibit fibrosis in animal models. Additionally, Turkey Tail and Shiitake have shown potential in reducing oxidative stress markers in the liver. However, while there are promising animal and in vitro studies, high-quality human clinical trials are limited and often of small scale. As such, the current scientific evidence supports the potential of certain fungi in supporting hepatic function, but more rigorous clinical research is necessary to confirm efficacy and establish appropriate dosing and safety in humans.
