Chanca Piedra (Phyllanthus niruri) has a long history of traditional use in South America and Asia for supporting liver health and treating ailments such as jaundice and hepatitis. More recently, scientific research has investigated its effects on the hepatic system. Preclinical studies, primarily in vitro and animal models, suggest that extracts of Chanca Piedra may have hepatoprotective effects, potentially reducing oxidative stress and inflammation in liver tissue. Some studies indicate it may help protect the liver from damage caused by toxins such as paracetamol and carbon tetrachloride, likely due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds like lignans, flavonoids, and tannins.
Limited human clinical trials have explored Chanca Piedra’s benefits in liver health. Some small studies have indicated improvements in liver function markers and reductions in hepatitis B viral load, though these findings are preliminary, with methodological limitations and small sample sizes. Systematic reviews generally conclude that while there is some promising evidence, it is not yet robust enough to confirm efficacy for liver disease or general hepatic support in humans.
