Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Caffeoylquinic acids (CQAs) are a group of polyphenolic compounds commonly found in many plants, including coffee, artichoke, and Echinacea. Their use in supporting the hepatic (liver) system is mainly backed by preclinical studies. Scientific research, primarily in vitro (cell culture) and in vivo (animal) models, has shown that CQAs have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which are beneficial for liver health. Several studies report that CQAs can protect liver cells from damage caused by toxins, such as carbon tetrachloride and acetaminophen, by reducing oxidative stress and inhibiting inflammatory pathways. Additionally, some animal studies suggest CQAs may help prevent liver fibrosis and improve liver enzyme levels.

However, while these findings are promising, there is a lack of robust human clinical trials directly demonstrating the efficacy of CQAs for liver support. Most evidence comes from non-human studies, and thus, the translation of these results to humans remains uncertain. Traditional use of CQA-rich plants for liver health exists, but the specific attribution to caffeoylquinic acids is a result of more recent phytochemical research. In summary, CQAs have some scientific backing for hepatic support, but the evidence is moderate and mostly preclinical, warranting further research in humans.
