Algae, particularly certain types such as spirulina and chlorella, have been studied for their potential benefits to the hepatic (liver) system. Scientific research, primarily in animal models and some small human studies, suggests that algae may support liver health through antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and detoxifying properties. For example, spirulina has been shown to reduce liver fat and protect against liver damage in animal models of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and chemically-induced liver injury. Chlorella supplementation has demonstrated a capacity to decrease liver enzyme levels (markers of liver damage) and improve lipid metabolism in some human studies, though sample sizes are typically small. The mechanisms proposed include the high content of antioxidants such as phycocyanin and chlorophyll, which may reduce oxidative stress in liver cells, as well as the binding of heavy metals and other toxins, potentially aiding in detoxification processes. However, while these findings are promising, there is a lack of large-scale, robust clinical trials in humans. Therefore, while algae is scientifically investigated for hepatic support and shows moderate evidence of benefit, more research is needed to firmly establish dosing, efficacy, and safety in diverse populations.
