Synopsis of Evidence: Fibroblast Growth Factor (FGF) and Heart Weakness

Fibroblast Growth Factors (FGFs) are a family of growth factors involved in angiogenesis, wound healing, and embryonic development. In the context of cardiovascular health, several preclinical and early clinical studies have explored the therapeutic potential of FGF, particularly FGF-2 (basic FGF), for treating heart weakness, such as in ischemic heart disease and heart failure.

Scientific research has demonstrated that FGF-2 can promote neovascularization (the formation of new blood vessels) in animal models of myocardial infarction and ischemic cardiomyopathy. This angiogenic effect is thought to help restore blood flow to compromised heart tissue and improve cardiac function. Early-phase clinical trials have tested direct administration of FGF-2 via intracoronary or intramyocardial injection in patients with severe coronary artery disease. Some studies have reported modest improvements in myocardial perfusion and exercise tolerance, though results are mixed and not universally positive.

Despite these findings, FGF therapy is not currently a standard treatment for heart failure or general “heart weakness.” Most supporting data come from animal studies or small-scale human trials, and larger, well-controlled clinical studies are lacking. Safety concerns, including the risk of promoting unwanted cell proliferation or tumorigenesis, remain unresolved. In summary, there is scientific rationale and preliminary evidence for FGF use in certain cardiac conditions, but its clinical application for heart weakness is not yet robustly validated.
