Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Nardostachys jatamansi, commonly known as spikenard or jatamansi, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is traditionally used to treat a variety of nervous system disorders, including headache, particularly those associated with tension or stress. The roots and rhizomes of the plant are considered to have calming, sedative, and antispasmodic properties, which are thought to help alleviate tension-type headaches. Ancient Ayurvedic texts often recommend jatamansi for its ability to "pacify" the mind and relieve symptoms of nervous irritability.

However, scientific research specifically supporting the efficacy of Nardostachys jatamansi in treating tension-type headaches is limited. Most available studies focus on its neuroprotective, anxiolytic, and anticonvulsant effects in animal models rather than direct impacts on headache in humans. Some small studies and reviews suggest that its calming effects may indirectly help with tension headaches, but robust clinical evidence is lacking. As such, the use of Nardostachys for tension headaches is primarily justified by traditional practice rather than scientific validation.
