Evidence supporting the use of: Panax Pseudoginseng
For the health condition: Headache (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Panax pseudoginseng, sometimes referred to as "Tienchi ginseng," has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), including for the management of headache. In TCM, headaches are often attributed to disturbances in blood flow, Qi stagnation, or the presence of "wind" and "dampness" in the body. Panax pseudoginseng is traditionally valued for its purported ability to invigorate blood circulation, resolve blood stasis, and reduce swelling, which are believed to alleviate pain symptoms such as headache. The root is commonly included in herbal formulas prescribed for various types of headaches, especially those associated with trauma or vascular issues, such as headaches following injury or with signs of blood stasis. Scientific studies directly examining Panax pseudoginseng for headache management are very limited and mainly preclinical. Some research has investigated its anti-inflammatory, vasodilatory, and neuroprotective properties, which could theoretically contribute to headache relief, but clinical trials focusing on headache as an endpoint are lacking. Thus, while its use for headache is well-established in traditional medicine systems, high-quality scientific evidence to validate this use is currently insufficient. The rating of "2" reflects the presence of tradition-based support and limited mechanistic plausibility, but an absence of robust clinical trials.
