Evidence supporting the use of: Bitter Grass
For the health condition: Hangover
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bitter Grass (commonly referring to Andrographis paniculata or similar plants) is traditionally used in several Asian cultures to alleviate hangover symptoms. In traditional Chinese medicine and Thai herbal practice, bitter herbs are often employed for their purported detoxifying and liver-protective properties, which are believed to help the body recover from the effects of alcohol consumption. However, the use of Bitter Grass specifically for hangover is not extensively documented in scientific literature, and there are no high-quality clinical trials directly evaluating its efficacy for this indication.
Most of the support for Bitter Grass in hangover management comes from anecdotal reports and its broader use for "cooling" the body, reducing fever, and supporting liver function in folk medicine. Some laboratory studies indicate that certain compounds in Bitter Grass, such as andrographolide, possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which could theoretically be beneficial in mitigating some biological effects of alcohol consumption, such as oxidative stress. Nevertheless, these findings are indirect and not specific to hangover relief. Therefore, while Bitter Grass is traditionally used for this purpose in some cultures, robust scientific evidence is lacking, and its use for treating hangover should be considered with caution.
