Evidence supporting the use of: Achyranthes
For the health condition: Hangover
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Achyranthes, particularly Achyranthes bidentata, is an herb widely used in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In these traditions, the plant is primarily valued for its anti-inflammatory, diuretic, and detoxifying properties. While Achyranthes is not a mainstream or widely documented remedy specifically for hangover in classical texts, there are some ethnobotanical references to its use for general detoxification and alleviation of symptoms that can overlap with hangover effects, such as headaches, edema, and malaise. In TCM, herbs that promote diuresis and "clear heat" or "eliminate toxins" are sometimes used post-alcohol consumption to support recovery, and Achyranthes may be included in such formulations.
However, there is very limited direct scientific research or clinical evidence supporting Achyranthes for hangover treatment or alcohol-induced toxicity in humans. Most modern pharmacological research has focused on its anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and renal protective effects, but not specifically on alcohol metabolism or its aftermath. Thus, its use for hangover is justified primarily by tradition and anecdotal reports rather than scientific validation. The strength of evidence for its effectiveness against hangover is weak (rated 1), reflecting sparse documentation and lack of direct studies.
