Rating (out of 5): 2

Flavonoids are a diverse group of plant-based polyphenolic compounds found in fruits, vegetables, and certain beverages. Their use for supporting hair health, including combatting hair loss or thinning, is primarily supported by emerging scientific evidence rather than long-standing traditional use. Flavonoids are known for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and vasodilatory properties, which are believed to play a role in scalp health and hair follicle maintenance. Several in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that specific flavonoids—such as epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) from green tea, quercetin, and proanthocyanidins—may promote hair growth by stimulating dermal papilla cells, prolonging the anagen (growth) phase, and reducing inflammation or oxidative stress that can contribute to hair follicle damage.

Human studies, however, remain limited. Some small clinical trials and observational studies suggest potential benefits, but results are not robust or consistent enough to strongly recommend flavonoids as a primary treatment for hair loss or thinning. The evidence is stronger for general scalp health and as an adjunct to other therapies rather than as a standalone solution. In summary, while there is a scientific rationale for the use of flavonoids in supporting hair health, the overall quality and quantity of human evidence is still preliminary, meriting a moderate evidence rating.
