Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Sugarcane has a long history of use in traditional hair care, particularly in regions where it is cultivated, such as parts of Asia and the Caribbean. Traditional remedies often include sugarcane juice or extracts as a natural moisturizer or ingredient in hair masks, believed to impart shine, soften hair, and reduce dryness. These uses are likely due to sugarcane’s natural content of glycolic acid, vitamins, and minerals, which are thought to benefit the scalp and hair when applied topically.

However, there is very limited scientific evidence to support the direct benefits of sugarcane for hair health. While glycolic acid (an alpha hydroxy acid present in sugarcane) is known in dermatology for its exfoliating and moisturizing properties on the skin, its effects specifically on hair or scalp health are not well studied in clinical trials. Most of the claims for sugarcane in hair care remain anecdotal or are based on its general moisturizing properties. Commercial hair products sometimes include sugarcane extracts, but often as part of a blend rather than as a primary active ingredient. In summary, the use of sugarcane in hair care is primarily based on tradition, with minimal scientific backing.
