Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Fruit acids, commonly known as alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) such as glycolic acid (from sugar cane), citric acid (from citrus fruits), and lactic acid (from milk and fruit), are increasingly used in hair care formulations. Scientific studies support their use primarily due to their exfoliating properties and ability to improve scalp health. AHAs help in removing dead skin cells, reducing dandruff, and facilitating better absorption of other hair care products. Research indicates that glycolic acid, in particular, can penetrate the hair shaft, increasing moisture retention and improving hair manageability. Furthermore, fruit acids can help rebalance scalp pH, which is beneficial in maintaining a healthy scalp environment and potentially minimizing some scalp disorders.

However, while there is scientific backing for the use of fruit acids in scalp exfoliation and hair conditioning, robust clinical trials directly linking fruit acid use with significant hair growth or dramatic improvement in hair health are limited. Most evidence comes from in vitro studies, small clinical trials, or extrapolation from skin care research. Therefore, the evidence is moderate (rated 3) and supports their use for general hair and scalp health rather than for treating specific hair conditions such as alopecia. Overall, fruit acids are scientifically validated for their exfoliating and scalp-conditioning effects in hair care.
