Evidence supporting the use of: American Basil
For the health condition: Hair Care (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
American Basil (Ocimum americanum), like other basil species, has a history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in South Asia and Africa. Traditional uses of basil for hair care commonly involve applying basil oil or extracts to the scalp to promote hair growth, reduce dandruff, and improve overall scalp health. These practices are largely based on anecdotal evidence and the longstanding cultural belief that basil’s antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties can benefit the scalp and hair follicles.
However, there is limited scientific research specifically investigating the effects of American Basil on hair health. Most available studies focus on the general antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties of basil species, which could theoretically contribute to a healthier scalp environment and indirectly support hair health. Nonetheless, direct clinical trials or robust experimental data validating efficacy for hair growth or other hair-related outcomes are not available. Therefore, while the traditional use of American Basil in hair care is well-established in some cultures, the supporting evidence remains largely anecdotal and is not strongly validated by modern science.
