Zinc and alpha-lipoic acid are both nutrients that have been investigated for their potential roles in supporting hair health. Zinc is an essential trace mineral involved in numerous enzymatic processes, including those related to hair follicle function and protein synthesis. Zinc deficiency has been associated with various forms of hair loss, such as telogen effluvium and alopecia areata. Supplementation in cases of deficiency has shown benefit in restoring hair growth, and several clinical studies support its role in maintaining healthy hair.[1][2]

Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) is an antioxidant that is sometimes included in hair supplements for its potential to reduce oxidative stress, which can contribute to cellular damage in the hair follicle. However, scientific evidence specifically linking ALA supplementation to improved hair growth or prevention of hair loss in humans is limited. Most studies highlight its general benefits for metabolic and neurological health, rather than direct effects on hair.[3]

The combination of zinc and alpha-lipoic acid ("zinc lipoic acid") is not a standard or widely researched formulation for hair health, but both ingredients individually have some scientific rationale for inclusion in hair-support supplements. The evidence is stronger for zinc, particularly in cases of deficiency. Overall, the scientific support for using zinc and alpha-lipoic acid to support hair health is moderate.
