Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Vitamins, particularly biotin (vitamin B7), vitamin D, and some B-complex vitamins, are commonly used to support hair health. Among these, biotin is the most frequently associated with hair growth and strength. Scientific evidence supporting the use of vitamins for hair health is moderate but not overwhelming. Several studies indicate that biotin supplementation can improve hair growth in individuals who are biotin-deficient, but deficiency is rare in developed countries. For the general population without diagnosed deficiencies, evidence for significant benefits is limited. Vitamin D deficiency has also been linked with hair loss disorders such as alopecia areata, and supplementation may aid those who are deficient. Other vitamins, like vitamins A and E, are involved in cellular growth and antioxidant protection, but excessive intake can be harmful and may even contribute to hair loss. Overall, while there is a biological rationale and some clinical evidence supporting the use of certain vitamins for hair health, the benefits are most notable for correcting deficiencies rather than enhancing hair growth in healthy individuals. The routine use of vitamin supplements for hair support in the absence of deficiency is not strongly supported by scientific research.
