Lipids play an important role in supporting the hair body system, and there is scientific evidence backing their relevance. Hair is composed largely of keratin, but its structure and function are significantly influenced by various lipids, including fatty acids, cholesterol, ceramides, and phospholipids. Lipids are essential for maintaining the integrity of the hair cuticle (outer layer), providing lubrication, and preventing excessive water loss, which in turn reduces brittleness and breakage.

Several studies have shown that deficiencies in essential fatty acids, such as omega-3 and omega-6, can lead to hair loss or poor hair quality. Supplementation with these fatty acids has been associated with improvements in hair density, thickness, and shine. Topical lipid-based treatments (such as oils and conditioners) are also widely used and have demonstrated efficacy in reducing damage from grooming and environmental stressors by replenishing the lipid layer on the hair shaft.

While the systemic intake of lipids (through diet) and their topical application both have scientific backing for hair health, the evidence is not absolute or universally strong, as individual response and underlying health conditions also play a role. However, the connection between lipid health and hair structure/function is well-established and supported by dermatological and biochemical research.
