Evidence supporting the use of: Jojoba
For the body system: Hair
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis) has a long history of traditional use for supporting hair health, particularly as a moisturizer and conditioner. Indigenous peoples of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico applied jojoba oil to hair and scalp to promote softness, manageability, and shine. The oil's unique composition—closely resembling human sebum—makes it a popular natural emollient in hair care products, and it is commonly used to help with dry scalp and hair breakage.
However, scientific evidence supporting the effectiveness of jojoba for hair growth or restoration is limited. Most available research focuses on its moisturizing and protective qualities rather than any direct stimulation of hair growth. Some in vitro studies suggest that jojoba oil can aid in protecting hair from breakage and reducing protein loss, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. As such, its continued use for the hair is primarily justified by tradition and anecdotal reports, rather than strong scientific validation. Nonetheless, jojoba remains a widely accepted and safe ingredient in cosmetic hair formulations for its conditioning and softening properties.
