Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Flaxseed oil has been traditionally used to support hair health, largely due to its high content of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an omega-3 fatty acid. Folk and alternative medicine sources often claim that flaxseed oil can improve hair shine, strength, and growth, attributing these effects to its fatty acids and antioxidant content. However, scientific studies specifically investigating the effects of flaxseed oil on hair growth, thickness, or overall hair health in humans are limited and inconclusive. Most of the evidence supporting its use is anecdotal or extrapolated from the general benefits of omega-3 fatty acids for skin and inflammation. Some animal studies and in vitro research suggest that omega-3 fatty acids may help reduce inflammation and improve skin and hair condition, but direct clinical trials in humans are lacking. Therefore, while flaxseed oil is commonly promoted in traditional and alternative health circles for hair support, robust scientific validation for this specific use is minimal at present.
