Evidence supporting the use of: Vitamin K (unspecified)
For the body system: Gums
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Vitamin K is scientifically recognized for its essential role in blood clotting and bone metabolism. Its use to support gum health is based on its involvement in processes that may indirectly benefit the gums, particularly through the regulation of proteins involved in tissue mineralization and repair. Scientific studies have shown that vitamin K deficiency can lead to increased bleeding, including bleeding gums, which is a symptom commonly associated with gum disease (gingivitis or periodontitis). Emerging research also points to vitamin K2's role in activating matrix Gla-protein (MGP), which helps prevent calcification of soft tissues, including arteries and possibly gum tissue. However, while there is a plausible biological mechanism for vitamin K supporting gum health and some clinical evidence linking deficiency to gum bleeding, there are limited controlled human studies directly assessing vitamin K supplementation for gum disease treatment or prevention. Most of the evidence comes from observational studies or reports of deficiency states. Therefore, while there is scientific rationale and limited evidence supporting the use of vitamin K for gum health—particularly in individuals at risk for deficiency—the direct evidence base remains moderate. Supplementation is generally only warranted in cases of deficiency or specific medical need, rather than as a routine measure for gum health in the general population.
