Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Curcuma, commonly known as turmeric, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine. In these traditions, turmeric has been applied topically or used in oral preparations to support oral health, including promoting gum health and alleviating gum inflammation. The rationale is largely based on turmeric’s anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, which are believed to reduce gum irritation and support healing. Turmeric pastes and mouth rinses are sometimes used in traditional home remedies for gingivitis and other minor gum concerns.

However, while these practices are well documented in traditional medicine, robust scientific evidence specifically supporting the use of turmeric for gum health is limited. A few small modern studies and clinical trials have begun to investigate turmeric (particularly its active compound, curcumin) for oral health, with some showing potential benefits in reducing plaque and gingival inflammation. But these studies are often small, preliminary, and sometimes lack rigorous controls. Therefore, the use of Curcuma for supporting the gums is primarily justified by traditional use, with emerging but not yet strong scientific validation.
