Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Vitamin B2, also known as riboflavin (including its phosphorylated form, riboflavin phosphate), has a scientifically recognized role in supporting the glandular system, particularly through its involvement in cellular energy metabolism and redox reactions. Riboflavin is an essential precursor to the cofactors flavin mononucleotide (FMN) and flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD), both of which are crucial for various enzymatic processes in the body, including those occurring in endocrine (glandular) tissues. The adrenal glands, thyroid, and pituitary are metabolically active organs that require efficient energy production and antioxidant defense, processes in which riboflavin-dependent enzymes are involved.

Deficiency in riboflavin can impair the function of these glands; for example, studies have shown that riboflavin deficiency may reduce adrenal gland function and steroid hormone synthesis in animal models. Additionally, riboflavin is required for the regeneration of glutathione, one of the primary intracellular antioxidants, which helps protect glandular tissues from oxidative stress. However, while riboflavin is clearly essential for overall metabolic and glandular health, direct high-quality human research specifically linking supplemental riboflavin phosphate to enhanced glandular system performance or to the treatment of glandular diseases is limited. Thus, the evidence is moderate: its biochemical necessity is well-established, but clinical outcomes from supplementation in those without deficiency remain less certain.
