Unsaturated fats, including monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids, have scientific evidence supporting their role in supporting the glandular (endocrine) system. These fats are critical components of cell membranes, including those of endocrine glands, and are involved in the synthesis of steroid hormones such as estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, types of polyunsaturated fats, are precursors to eicosanoids, which participate in cell signaling and influence hormone production and release.
Research has shown that diets higher in unsaturated fats (as opposed to saturated fats) can positively affect insulin sensitivity and support pancreatic function, which is part of the glandular system. Additionally, some studies suggest that adequate intake of unsaturated fats may support thyroid health and general hormonal balance. For example, a review in Endocrine Reviews (2014) discusses how dietary fats can influence endocrine function, including the modulation of leptin and adiponectin, hormones produced by adipose tissue.
However, while there is a reasonable scientific basis for the role of unsaturated fats in glandular health, direct clinical trials specifically targeting the use of unsaturated fats for overall glandular system "support" are limited. Most evidence is indirect, focusing on specific glands or hormones. Thus, while unsaturated fats are essential for healthy endocrine function, the evidence for their targeted use to "support the glandular system" as a whole is moderate.
