Smilagenin is a steroidal sapogenin found primarily in plants of the Smilax genus, such as sarsaparilla. Its traditional use stems from indigenous and folk medicine practices, where sarsaparilla root preparations were believed to support the glandular system, particularly the adrenal and reproductive glands. These beliefs were largely based on the doctrine of signatures and the observation that plants containing steroid-like compounds could have effects similar to hormones in the human body. However, there is no robust scientific evidence directly linking smilagenin to glandular system support. Most of the claims are extrapolated from the structural similarity of smilagenin to endogenous steroid hormones, but clinical studies are lacking. The compound has not been widely studied in humans, and the supposed benefits for the glandular system remain unproven in rigorous scientific trials.
