Evidence supporting the use of: DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid)
For the body system: Glandular System
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) is an omega-3 fatty acid that plays a critical role in the structure and function of cellular membranes, particularly in the brain, retina, and other nervous tissues. While the term "glandular system" typically refers to the collection of glands that secrete hormones (endocrine system), there is some scientific evidence supporting DHA’s relevance to certain glands, especially the brain (pituitary, hypothalamus) and the pineal gland, which are central to hormonal regulation. DHA constitutes a significant portion of the phospholipid content of neuronal and glial cell membranes, and is necessary for optimal neuroendocrine function. Studies have shown that adequate DHA intake is associated with improved cognitive function, and may influence hormone production and signaling, particularly in the hypothalamic-pituitary axis. Additionally, animal and cell studies suggest DHA can modulate the production of hormones such as melatonin and influence inflammatory mediators relevant to glandular function.
However, direct clinical evidence supporting DHA supplementation specifically for "glandular system" support (beyond neurological or retinal benefits) in humans is limited. Most research focuses on its importance for brain health, fetal development, and cardiovascular benefits, with only indirect implications for endocrine gland support. Thus, while there is some scientific rationale, the evidence base specific to the glandular system is moderate.
