Calendula officinalis, commonly known as marigold, has a long history of traditional use for oral and skin conditions, including gingivitis. Recent scientific studies have begun to investigate its effectiveness for oral health. Calendula contains bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, triterpenoids, and essential oils, which exhibit anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and wound-healing properties.

Several small-scale clinical trials and in vitro studies have explored Calendula’s effects on gingivitis. For example, randomized controlled trials have shown that calendula mouthwash or gel can reduce gingival inflammation and bleeding scores compared to placebo. The proposed mechanism is reduction of bacterial load and modulation of inflammatory responses in gingival tissues. A 2013 study published in the Journal of Clinical and Experimental Dentistry found that using a calendula mouthwash significantly decreased gingival index and plaque index over a 6-week period. In vitro research also confirms Calendula extracts inhibit common oral pathogens such as Streptococcus mutans.

However, most studies to date have been relatively small and of moderate methodological quality. Larger, well-designed trials are needed to confirm these findings and determine optimal dosing and formulation. Despite this, the current evidence base, combined with a strong traditional use, suggests a modest but real benefit for Calendula in supporting gingivitis treatment, especially as an adjunct to standard oral hygiene practices.
