Evidence supporting the use of: Enzymes blend (proprietary)
For the health condition: Gas and Bloating
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Enzyme blends, typically containing digestive enzymes such as amylase, protease, lipase, lactase, and sometimes others like cellulase or alpha-galactosidase, are scientifically validated for supporting the management of gas and bloating. These enzymes aid in the breakdown of macronutrients—carbohydrates, proteins, and fats—into smaller, easily absorbable molecules during digestion. Several clinical studies have demonstrated benefits for specific digestive complaints. For example, lactase supplementation is well-established to help prevent bloating and gas in lactose-intolerant individuals. Alpha-galactosidase (the active ingredient in Beano) has shown efficacy in reducing gas production from foods like beans and cruciferous vegetables. Protease and amylase may also help food digestion, thereby potentially reducing the substrate available for bacterial fermentation, which can cause gas and bloating. A 2011 double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in "Digestive Diseases and Sciences" showed that an enzyme supplement containing multiple enzymes reduced post-prandial bloating and fullness in subjects with functional dyspepsia. Another systematic review (2020, "Nutrients") concluded that digestive enzyme supplementation can be effective for some patients with symptoms of bloating and gas, particularly those with identifiable enzyme deficiencies (e.g., lactase, pancreatic insufficiency). While not all enzyme blends are created equal—and efficacy depends on the specific enzymes and the cause of symptoms—there is a solid scientific rationale and moderate to strong clinical evidence for their use in certain populations.
