For the health condition: Gall Stones
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Indian Madder (Rubia cordifolia), known as "Manjistha" in Ayurveda, has been traditionally used in Indian medicine for its purported benefits in supporting liver and kidney health. In Ayurvedic texts, it is believed to possess properties that may help in "breaking down" or "dissolving" stones in the gallbladder and urinary tract, often as part of polyherbal formulations. However, there is very limited scientific research specifically investigating Indian Madder's efficacy in treating or preventing gallstones. Most modern pharmacological studies focus on its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and hepatoprotective activities, but these do not directly address gallstone dissolution or removal. As a result, its use for gallstone management is justified primarily by traditional practice and historical use, rather than robust scientific validation. The evidence supporting its use for gallstones is therefore weak, largely anecdotal, and not substantiated by controlled clinical studies. In summary, while Indian Madder is a respected herb in traditional medicine systems for a variety of ailments, its application for gallstones remains rooted in tradition rather than proven by scientific evidence.
