Evidence supporting the use of: Fragrant Angelica
For the health condition: Gall Stones
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Fragrant Angelica (Angelica dahurica) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), where it is known as "Bai Zhi." In TCM, Angelica species are believed to have properties that help "move qi" and "dispel dampness," and preparations containing Fragrant Angelica are sometimes included in formulas intended to support the liver and gallbladder or relieve pain related to gallstones. However, these uses are based on traditional theories rather than modern biomedical mechanisms. There is very limited scientific research directly evaluating Fragrant Angelica for gallstones. No high-quality clinical trials or robust pharmacological studies confirm its effectiveness or specific mechanism of action against gallstone formation or symptoms. The support for its use in gallstone cases is therefore primarily traditional, relying on centuries of anecdotal and empirical use within herbal medicine systems. Thus, while it is referenced in some herbal compendia and used in certain traditional formulas for gallbladder complaints, the evidence is weak and largely unvalidated by modern science.
