Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Chenopodium album, commonly known as lamb's quarters or bathua, has been traditionally used in various systems of folk medicine in Asia for a wide range of ailments, including digestive and hepatic disorders. Its use for gall stones (cholelithiasis), however, is primarily based on anecdotal and ethnobotanical reports rather than robust clinical or pharmacological studies. In Ayurvedic and Unani medicine, there are occasional references to its use for promoting bile flow and supporting liver function, which may have led to its application in gall stone management. However, there is no high-quality scientific evidence, such as randomized controlled trials or systematic reviews, to validate its efficacy or safety specifically for gall stones. Phytochemical investigations reveal the plant is rich in saponins, flavonoids, and other compounds with potential choleretic or hepatoprotective activity, but these effects have not been directly linked to gall stone dissolution or prevention in humans. Overall, its use for gall stones is rooted in traditional practice with very weak supporting evidence, and it should not be considered a validated or recommended treatment without further research.
