Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Olive oil has a long history of traditional use in supporting the gallbladder and biliary system, particularly in Mediterranean and folk medicine. Traditionally, olive oil is consumed to "stimulate bile flow" and is sometimes used in so-called "gallbladder flushes" where it is ingested in large amounts along with lemon juice or other ingredients, with the aim of expelling gallstones. The rationale is that the fat in olive oil triggers the release of cholecystokinin, a hormone that causes the gallbladder to contract and release bile, potentially aiding digestion and possibly preventing gallstone formation. However, scientific evidence for the effectiveness of olive oil in treating or preventing gallstones is limited and inconclusive. Some small studies and case reports suggest that dietary fats, including olive oil, can stimulate bile flow, but there is no strong clinical evidence that olive oil alone prevents or dissolves gallstones. In summary, while olive oil has traditional use and some physiological basis for supporting bile flow, robust scientific validation is lacking, and its use for gallbladder health should be considered with caution.
