Pycnogenol, a standardized extract from the bark of the French maritime pine (Pinus pinaster), is widely used for its antioxidant properties, specifically to combat free radical damage. The scientific basis for this use is well-documented. Pycnogenol contains a unique blend of procyanidins, bioflavonoids, and phenolic acids, which have demonstrated significant free radical scavenging activity in in vitro and in vivo studies.
Several peer-reviewed studies have shown that Pycnogenol supplementation increases antioxidant capacity and reduces biomarkers of oxidative stress in humans. For instance, clinical trials have reported reductions in oxidative DNA damage, lipid peroxidation, and protein carbonylation after administration of Pycnogenol in healthy volunteers and patients with chronic conditions associated with oxidative stress. The mechanism is thought to involve both direct scavenging of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species and upregulation of endogenous antioxidant enzymes.
Systematic reviews and meta-analyses support its efficacy as an antioxidant, though they note that the quality and size of studies vary. While not all effects translate into clear clinical outcomes, the evidence for Pycnogenol’s antioxidant activity and its ability to mitigate free radical damage is stronger than for many other dietary supplements. Thus, its use for supporting or treating free radical damage is primarily justified by scientific evidence.
