Evidence supporting the use of: Western Mugwort
For the body system: Female Reproductive System
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Western Mugwort (Artemisia ludoviciana) has a longstanding history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly among Native American peoples and in Western herbalism, to support the female reproductive system. Historical records and ethnobotanical sources indicate that various species of mugwort, including Western Mugwort, were used to help regulate the menstrual cycle, promote menstrual flow (emmenagogue effect), and relieve menstrual discomfort such as cramps. Preparations of mugwort were sometimes used as teas or poultices.
However, modern scientific validation for these uses is limited. While some related species of Artemisia have been studied for their phytochemical content (such as flavonoids, volatile oils, and sesquiterpene lactones), there is a paucity of rigorous clinical research specifically on Western Mugwort for female reproductive health. Most evidence remains anecdotal or based on traditional knowledge rather than on controlled trials. Therefore, while the traditional use is well established, scientific support is weak, and safety data are limited. Individuals considering its use should consult healthcare professionals, as some Artemisia species can have contraindications, particularly in pregnancy.
