Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3

Vitexicarpin (also known as casticin) is a flavonoid compound found in the fruits of Vitex agnus-castus (chaste tree). The use of Vitex agnus-castus to support the female reproductive system, particularly for menstrual disorders and premenstrual syndrome (PMS), is well established in traditional herbal medicine, especially in European and Mediterranean cultures. The traditional rationale is that preparations containing Vitexicarpin are believed to help regulate hormonal balance, alleviate symptoms of PMS, and address menstrual irregularities. Historical texts and pharmacopeias have documented the use of chaste tree berries for centuries as a remedy for women’s reproductive health.

While there is emerging scientific interest in Vitexicarpin for its potential bioactive effects, most clinical and preclinical research focuses on the whole extract of Vitex agnus-castus rather than isolated Vitexicarpin. Some studies suggest that Vitexicarpin may contribute to dopaminergic activity, which could influence prolactin secretion and thus have indirect effects on the menstrual cycle. However, definitive clinical evidence for Vitexicarpin alone is limited. Overall, the justification for its use to support the female reproductive system remains primarily traditional, though some early pharmacological studies provide a partial scientific basis. More robust clinical trials are needed to clarify its efficacy and mechanism of action.
