Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Secoisolariciresinol diglycoside (SDG) is a plant lignan predominantly found in flaxseed. After ingestion, SDG is converted by intestinal bacteria into the mammalian lignans enterodiol and enterolactone, which possess phytoestrogenic activity. Several studies have investigated the effects of flaxseed and its lignans on the female reproductive system, particularly in relation to hormone modulation and menstrual health.

Clinical and preclinical research suggests that SDG may influence estrogen metabolism and modulate circulating hormone levels. Some small human trials and animal studies have indicated that flaxseed consumption can lengthen the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle and reduce the risk of anovulatory cycles, potentially supporting reproductive health. Additionally, SDG's phytoestrogenic properties have led to interest in its role in alleviating menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, though the evidence remains mixed.

While these findings show promise, the overall evidence is still limited, with relatively few high-quality, large-scale clinical trials directly evaluating isolated SDG for specific female reproductive outcomes. Most available data are from studies using whole flaxseed or flaxseed extracts, making it difficult to attribute effects solely to SDG. Thus, there is moderate scientific support (rated 3/5) for SDG's role in supporting the female reproductive system, primarily through hormone modulation, but further research is needed to clarify its efficacy and mechanisms.
