Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Rhapontic rhubarb (Rheum rhaponticum) root extract has scientific support for its use in supporting the female reproductive system, specifically for alleviating symptoms of menopause. Clinical studies have investigated a standardized extract of rhapontic rhubarb root (ERr 731), which is rich in rhaponticin and related stilbenes, for its effects on menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, and mood disturbances. Multiple randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials have demonstrated that ERr 731 significantly reduces the severity and frequency of menopausal symptoms compared to placebo, with improvements noted as early as four weeks of use. The mechanism is believed to involve selective binding to estrogen receptor-beta, producing estrogen-like effects without stimulating estrogen receptor-alpha, hence showing a favorable safety profile without promoting endometrial proliferation. Reviews and meta-analyses conclude that rhapontic rhubarb extract is both effective and well-tolerated for managing menopausal complaints. There is less evidence for its use in other areas of female reproductive health, but for menopause specifically, the scientific validation is robust. Rhapontic rhubarb is not traditionally used as widely as other botanicals (like black cohosh), but its modern clinical use is well documented in the literature.
