For the body system: Female Reproductive System
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3
Peony (Paeonia lactiflora), particularly its root, has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for supporting female reproductive health. In TCM, peony is often prescribed to "nourish the blood," regulate menstruation, and alleviate symptoms such as menstrual pain, irregular cycles, and premenstrual syndrome (PMS). The most commonly used preparation is "White Peony Root" (Bai Shao), which is frequently included in herbal formulas for gynecological conditions, such as Xiao Yao San and Shao Yao Gan Cao Tang. The traditional belief is that peony helps to balance hormones and improve circulation within the reproductive system. Scientific studies on peony are limited but suggest some potential mechanisms. Paeoniflorin, a principal active compound in peony root, has demonstrated anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and mild estrogenic effects in laboratory and animal studies. Some small clinical trials have used peony, often in combination with other herbs (notably licorice), to manage conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and menstrual irregularities, with mixed but promising results. However, rigorous, large-scale human studies are lacking. Thus, while traditional use is well-documented and there is some preliminary scientific support, the evidence is not strong enough to be considered fully validated by modern standards.
