European peony (Paeonia officinalis) has a long history of use in traditional European and Chinese herbal medicine for supporting the female reproductive system. Historically, peony root has been used for menstrual disorders, such as dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation), irregular periods, and symptoms associated with menopause. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), peony (often the related species Paeonia lactiflora) is a key ingredient in formulas like Shao Yao Gan Cao Tang, which is used to relieve muscle cramps and menstrual pain.

While there is a strong tradition of use, scientific validation is limited. Some studies, mainly on Paeonia lactiflora rather than Paeonia officinalis, have indicated that peony compounds, such as paeoniflorin, may have anti-inflammatory, muscle-relaxant, and hormone-modulating properties. These may theoretically benefit menstrual and reproductive health. However, high-quality clinical trials specifically investigating European peony for female reproductive health are lacking.
