Evidence supporting the use of: Clary sage
For the body system: Female Reproductive System
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Clary sage (Salvia sclarea) has a long history of traditional use in supporting the female reproductive system, particularly in addressing menstrual discomfort, balancing hormones, and easing symptoms associated with menopause. Historically, clary sage essential oil has been used in aromatherapy and traditional herbal medicine to alleviate menstrual cramps and promote relaxation. Some traditional remedies also utilize clary sage to support regular menstrual cycles and manage symptoms such as hot flashes and mood swings.
However, scientific evidence supporting these uses is limited. There are a few small-scale studies and anecdotal reports suggesting that inhalation or topical application of clary sage essential oil may reduce stress and menstrual pain, possibly due to its purported effects on cortisol levels and its mild estrogen-like properties (phytoestrogens). For example, a small clinical trial found that clary sage oil inhalation reduced cortisol levels and improved mood among menopausal women, but larger, more rigorous studies are lacking. Most claims regarding clary sage’s benefits for the female reproductive system remain based on traditional and anecdotal evidence rather than robust scientific validation. Thus, its use is best characterized as traditional with some preliminary but inconclusive scientific interest.
