Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3

Chinese peony (Paeonia lactiflora) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for supporting the female reproductive system. In TCM, the root—often referred to as "Bai Shao"—is commonly prescribed to "nourish the blood," "regulate menstruation," and alleviate menstrual pain or irregularities. It is frequently included in classic herbal formulas such as Shao Yao Gan Cao Tang and Dang Gui Shao Yao San, which are used to address issues like menstrual cramps, irregular periods, and symptoms associated with premenstrual syndrome (PMS).

Scientific evidence for these uses is limited but growing. Some clinical and preclinical studies suggest that Chinese peony, especially in combination with other herbs like licorice (Glycyrrhiza uralensis), may help alleviate symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and dysmenorrhea due to possible antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, and hormone-modulating effects. However, high-quality, large-scale human trials are lacking, and most evidence comes from small studies or is based on traditional use and pharmacological rationale rather than rigorous clinical validation. Thus, while there is a strong traditional basis for using Chinese peony in support of female reproductive health, the scientific evidence is moderate but not definitive.
