Chaste tree (Vitex agnus-castus), also known as chasteberry, has been traditionally used for centuries to support female reproductive health, particularly for issues related to the menstrual cycle. Its use dates back to ancient Greece and Rome, where it was utilized to treat a variety of gynecological complaints. Modern scientific research provides a moderate level of validation for its efficacy, particularly in alleviating symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), and certain types of menstrual irregularity.
Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have shown that chaste tree extract can significantly reduce PMS symptoms, such as mood swings, breast tenderness, and bloating. The proposed mechanism involves modulation of prolactin levels via dopaminergic effects on the pituitary gland, which may help normalize menstrual cycles and reduce symptoms related to hormone imbalance. The German Commission E has also approved chaste tree for menstrual cycle irregularities, PMS, and mastalgia (breast pain).
However, while the evidence is promising, it is not unequivocal. Not all studies show consistent benefits, and methodological limitations exist. Most research supports short-term use (up to three months), and safety beyond this period is less established. Nonetheless, the scientific consensus is that chaste tree is a reasonable option for supporting the female reproductive system, especially for PMS and mild cycle irregularities.
