Evidence supporting the use of: Chromium dinicotinate glycinate
For the health condition: Fat Metabolism (poor)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Chromium dinicotinate glycinate is a form of the trace mineral chromium, chelated with niacin (nicotinic acid) and glycine. Chromium has been studied for its role in macronutrient metabolism, including fat metabolism, due to its function in potentiating the action of insulin. This effect theoretically could influence body composition and lipid metabolism. Several small studies and some meta-analyses have investigated chromium supplementation (various forms, mostly picolinate) for effects on body weight, body fat, and lipid profiles. However, the overall evidence is limited and mixed, with many studies showing minimal or no benefit in terms of enhanced fat metabolism or weight loss. Chromium dinicotinate glycinate specifically has not been robustly studied compared to other chromium salts, but it is believed to have similar bioactivity.
Most authoritative bodies, such as the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, conclude that chromium supplementation does not have a significant effect on fat metabolism or body composition in the general population. Although chromium is essential for health, deficiencies are rare, and supplementation has not consistently demonstrated clinical benefits in fat metabolism. Therefore, while there is a scientific basis for chromium’s involvement in metabolism, strong scientific evidence supporting chromium dinicotinate glycinate’s use specifically for “poor fat metabolism” is lacking. The evidence supporting its use for this purpose rates low (2 out of 5), reflecting limited and inconsistent clinical data.
